“ritual” is a sensory experience designed to create a harmonious and appreciative feeling towards life and time. The project explores the idea of incorporating spirituality into one’s daily routine, in their own desired way and on their own terms. A ritual is born when spirituality and routine is combined. This ritual is designed to take place in the morning, and make sure your day starts with a moment of appreciation for time. The ritual is a combination of lighting candles and listening to a meditative sound piece, designed to make you calm.
The candle holder represents a calendar, with a candle for each day of the month. Everyday of the month you get to light up a new candle, and the past candles that are burned more than the newer days, represents how time will keep moving and pass. All we really have is the present. The candle holder draws inspiration from the nordic candle culture and the advent candles that are used to countdown to christmas. Having a candle for each day, represents the significance of the normal day.
The sound piece is a combination of different Solfeggio frequencies that range from 174 Hz to 963 Hz. Research shows that sound frequencies have many health benefits and a calming effect on the human body. Some research suggests that some frequencies may have an impact on the human body on a cellular level, that enhance certain healing chemicals in the body.
The sound of the frequency is linked with a breathing technique 527. You breathe in through your nose for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 2 seconds and breath out through the mouth for 7 seconds. This breathing technique is known to trick the brain into thinking you are more relaxed than you might seem. It hopefully makes your mind calm and relaxed.
This ritual is designed for one to appreciate time on different levels. To appreciate your morning enough to take a moment for yourself and your body to get started for the day. To appreciate the seconds passing by, while breathing in and out. To appreciate your month that you spend. Most importantly, not counting down to one special day, but understanding everyday can be special and appreciated the same way.
Our current lifestyle is hectic and our calendars are packed full. Starting your day with a ritual brings your mind back to your body, and reminds you of the time passing by. This life is not only meant for accomplishing goals, but rather enjoying the time we spend. The calendar works opposite to a normal calendar and promotes conscious time use.
